I am a junkie .. a cleanse junkie. The idea of not eating the junk processed, over salted, over fried, too much of anything appeals to me very much. Now with studies showing intermittent fasting is on the trend and can be good for you, why not try it? I have tried a few cleanses over time so I feel like I can talk about them, and how I felt and which ones I would do again. This is my first "fast" though.

Salt ~ Lemonade ~ Cayenne Pepper Cleanse

This cleanse is hardcore and I at my age and where I am at in life would not do it again. You down SALTY water first thing in the morning which almost immediately follows with a trip to the bathroom since it runs straight through your system. You drink the lemonade cayenne pepper drink all day and a laxative tea at night. You do this for several days. Supposedly it helps clear out your colon. Which I can see ... around day 5 there were still some solids which I had to idea where they were coming from seeing as I was only drinking liquids all day long. Yes, I lost weight. I think that's why people would do this .. for a quick way to lose 5+ pounds. You also lose muscle mass .. that's not good. You are getting virtually no nutrients, so all around it's not good. I was young and crazy... looking back I can't believe I did it, I definitely wouldn't do it again though and wouldn't recommend to anyone to do it.

Freshii Juice Cleanse

Freshii is a health restaurant in Chicagoland. I was trying for my second child and my hubby purchased a Kuerig which I instantly became addicted to. I was up to 8 cups of coffee (BLACK) a day even getting it at restaurants. I thought I was addicted to the taste .. but it was the caffeine unfortunately. So I had to drop my coffee consumption and decided to do this cleanse to achieve it. I am a huge fan of going cold turkey when I have to quit something. I went to Freshii everyday to get my freshly squeezed juices. The first one I would drink had beets and that was the hardest for me to drink. I am not a fan of pure beets like that. Day 2 I remember being balled up in fetal postion my headache was off the charts. I couldn't take anything for it and I was suffering ... big time. My body was looking for the caffeine. Day 3 - still numb but I persisted until Day 5. 4 years later I still no longer drink coffee. I remember trying to do this cleanse again, but I failed. I really could not get pass the beet drink. What's nice is that you can choose the amount of time you want to do it .. 1, 3 or 5 days.

Shaklee Cleanse

I just did this one about 3 months ago. You can eat with this one!! YAY, it's a fruit/veggie/fat diet, you take a bunch of pills and a probiotic. Prior to this, I was taking a pre-workout supplement (has caffeine) to help me get through my workouts better, so by Day 2 on the cleanse, I was definitely having headaches. Day 3 I was a little better, still had a few headaches every now and then. Day 4-7 I was fantastic. I lost about 6 pounds and kept it off. This cleanse gave me the boost to start doing Fab4 Smoothies for breakfast and I haven't eaten white carbs, processed food, or refined sugar since.
This one was easy to do since you can eat, so I would do it again. I can imagine it being hard for people that rely heavily on carbs and dairy though for their foods. You cannot eat any of this.

ProLon FMD - Mimics Fasting

I am blogging this real time since I am currently on day 2. Day 1 wasn't bad at all. The kale crackers were pretty tasty. The olives are so yummy and the soups were pretty good. Day 1 is always the easiest .. it's when the headaches of Day 2 and 3 are when it's bad.

So here I am day 2 - already woke up with a slight buzz in my head. I drink tea - some with caffeine, some without. So I know that's what's getting me right now. It's 12:22 - I have had my tea and nut bar for breakfast and now snacked on the garlic olives (I swear, I can eat these all day long) and the L-drink that you are given for Day 2 - 5. You can steep the hibiscus tea that they give you to mix with the L-drink and water so that it has some taste. You're suppose to drink it throughout the day, but I am already half way through. I wonder if you can carbonate it? I just started a chat with ProLon to find out! From Nicole Lawrence on chat "<span style="background-color: #e7efd3; color: #666666; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; white-space: pre-wrap;">If it is absolutely zero calories and nothing added then you should be fine"<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> <span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> given f She has gone silent, so I am wondering if she is checking to make sure what she told me is fine. Her final response, "<span style="background-color: #e7efd3; color: #666666; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; white-space: pre-wrap;">As per our Nutritionist, if it is absolutely no calories then you are ok to drink<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: "verdana" , "geneva" , sans-serif; font-size: 13px; white-space: pre-wrap;"> So maybe tomorrow I will carbonate since I am almost done with today's drink. Lunch is suppose to be the olives, and the mushroom soup but I snacked on the olives now and will eat the soup in an hour or so.
Day 3 - woke up with a slight numbing headache, nothing serious. Wasn't hungry at all today. Ate my breakfast around 10, lunch around 3pm, dinner around 6. I felt great, headache went away after I started moving around. I had more energy then I thought I would.

Day 4-5 - staying strong. No more headaches, eating is barely in my mind anymore. I am in a groove between making my L-drink for the day, eating my little packets of olives and soups. Hoping for kale crackers because those were actually good!!

All around, this wasn't bad, very doable and easy and I would do it again. I was still eating which was great. The food was tasty and I felt better overall. My body was craving protein though. On day 2 of going back to normal food, I ate an omelette with a ground pork/turkey blend of sauteed onions and tomatoes. I had porkchops for dinner with green beans. I was eating meat all day the second day, I definitely was missing protein. I did the 3 month fast so looking forward to after Thanksgiving for round 2!
The holidays are just around the corner ... so many things come to mind .. who is hosting, what do I make, my holiday list is how long again, and they want WHHAAT!! UGH ... what about you Mommy, where are you on this list, where are you on the list of priorities? My husband works pretty crazy hours, I have dubbed myself a "Single, not Single Parent" ... I don't have to worry about how to pay the bills and keep a roof over my family's head, but I do have to make sure my girls are well taken care of. Thankfully my village of sanity includes my awesome parents that give me a hand pretty often. I digress ... so how do I find time for myself?

Number 1 - Exercise - Yes! Love me some FIT4MOM, but right now with my 3 year old's schedule, I can't make any classes .. so my second LOVE of exercise life .. Burn Boot Camp. Membership comes with childcare and thankfully my 3 year old loves it in there and runs in with excitement to play with the different toys. I get the most sweaty workout imaginable (of course you have to workout by perceived exertion - meaning, if you don't actually try your best and push yourself harder, you're not going to get a good workout). It's a wonderful community of women that are supportive and who I can call friends now. My location has awesome times in the morning, so no excuses that timing isn't right mommies ... you know you can make it work if you really wanted to.

Burn Boot Camp

Number 2 - FOOD - ugh .. here come the sugar loaded desserts, carb loaded foods like stuffing, or mashed potatoes .. YIKES!! Along with all of this comes sugar spike galore. Don't set yourself up for failure by eating a sugary high carb breakfast that will not satiated. Eat protein and veggies ... why spike your blood sugar first thing .. that makes snacks too easy to eat. I love my smoothie is the morning, it keeps me full and happy until well after lunch. YUM!! Don't fall into the trap of unnecessary sweets. Take care of your body and fuel it, don't break it.

Number 3 - Habits - I have come to the habit of not leaving a room to go to another room without taking something with me ... example .. bedroom to kitchen. More than likely I have a mug of half drunken tea of my night table. I grab it and bring it down, I used to not do that and head down to the kitchen empty handed to start breakfast for my fam ... complete waste. This actually takes effort, and I am still working on it. I stop myself, take a look around what I can bring with me and then go. Doing this I have found that I am more efficient and have more time to do other things.

Number 4 - What can help you - if you can't afford a cleaning lady, seriously consider a roomba. I love mine and I don't know what I have been doing without one for so long. It forces you to pick things up off the floor (toys, clothes, more toys, legos, more toys) and put them in their proper places, but the amount of dust this little robot from heaven picks up is astounding. Crossing my fingers, I am actually hoping to get another one for a christmas/birthday/valentines day combo for the upstairs so that I don't have to carry it up and down every day. This is seriously such a good investment that you too will wonder why you didn't get one.

Number 5 - Girl time - make it happen, no excuses. Dinners, book clubs, baking nights, whatever it is, your girls understand what this thing call #motherhood is all about, you need a break from it - Every mom needs a break from it ... even an hour to yourself is healthy for you. You need to take a break and have real girl talk, let everything out because no one understands but your girls.

Number 6 - Spa time - this is pushing it and admittedly I don't get much need spa time, maybe a pedicure for the holidays, but that's about it. A good 60 minute massage is all you really need and it sends you back to your family restored, relaxed, energized and happy. You're a better mom when you are all of these things. Don't forget to pamper yourself Mama!

The best spa that I have ever been to in the Midwest is the Woodhouse Spa .. beats anything in Chicago for serenity and awesomeness. It's just so sad that it's so far away.

One word .. FIT4MOM !!

Fit4Mom has workouts for every stage of motherhood from being pregnant to wanting to get back that killer bod (or at least lose a few pounds and then some ;) )

There is prenatal fitness classes called FIt4Baby ... studies have shown how beneficial it is to workout out while pregnant (with your doctors permission of course). There classes are a great workout plus you get to meet other women on the same journey as you are.

After you have that cute bundle of joy, there is Stroller Strides or Stroller Barre. Both classes enable you to bring your baby, both classes keep you and that baby moving so that they aren't stationary (and we moms know how babies like to feel movement) and it also incorporates singing and keeping your baby entertained while you get a fantastic workout. Stroller Strides is more cardio and strength while Stroller Barre is more toning, posture and alignment. Best part of class is that there are playgroups where the playgroup captain brings fun things for the kids and snacks for the kids and the moms! There is also Mom's Night Out, where moms get together monthly at night, get to get dressed for a dinner one month, pedicure the next! Where else can you find a community like this .. of moms that become friends and help you out when needed. It's amazing!

If you are really serious about getting back into shape they have a moms only class called Body Back that also works in nutrition and keeps you accountable. Classes meet twice a week and there are a lot of before and after pictures of moms that really are getting their bodies back!

They also implemented a new class called Strides 360. This class is neat, lots and lots of cardio with active resting strength. It's great to mix it in with Stroller Barre or Body Back even Run Club.

Try it Mommas! Click here to find your location. Most locations do a trial, so you have nothing to lose and everything to gain for trying it out.

Love your body, it's the only one you have. Honor it by working out and having the intention to live a healthy life for you and your family.
Ah Disney ... The most magical place on the planet. I have hundreds of memories from going to Disney as a child from ages 4 - 15, at least once a year, sometimes twice. Easily about 20 times in my lifetime. So having the chance to run into Magic Kingdom through Cinderella's castle, not to mention the amazing medals that you can get ... How can you turn that down?? After paying the bargain price of $350 to run a 10K and Half Marathon the training commenced (after I gave birth to an almost 10 pound baby!!).

One thing I have to say about Disney, their packet pickup and actual event is that they are extremely organized. After working with a local running company, and just participating in other races, no one has the organization or man power like Disney has. If you can afford it, staying within Disney property is worth it. They had specific transportation for the run to the expo and to the races itself. You don't have to worry about parking and the traffic to get to the expo or the race. The buses all had their own routes to get in and out.

The expo was very organized. It reminded me of a Bank of America packet pickup. Huge space, everything marked, easy to follow and fast. The only thing that was horrible was the line to pay if you were going to buy extra goodies and commemorative items. People were going crazy buying 2-3 dooney & Burke special "princess" edition purses. I personally thought they were quite cheesy and on the Facebook group for the Glass Slipper challenge, a lot of people had buyers remorse and we're trying to sell them.

10K race:
Organization was fantastic! Easy to find corrals, tons and tons of port-o-potties, water stations everywhere in case you needed to drink water prior to the race. It was chilly so I recommend you bring throw away layers or a garbage bag to keep you warm until you run. If you have a mylar wrap from the 5k (if you are running all three races - no special medal for all three, just the two), bring that instead since you get another one after the 10K. The ladies watching the last corral weren't really paying attention, a lot of people were jumping corrals. No one was busted. Biggest complaint is that it took forever to get going. If you were in the last corral like me (I forgot to submit proof of finishing time...pregnancy brain) you didn't start until about 45 minutes after the first set of people started. The course was great, you ran through Epcot and all the countries, and through the the boardwalk. There were several characters throughout, but I did not stop for any pictures. I do wish that they placed more port-o-potties along route. Lines to use them were very long and you worry about being swept. There were enough water stations so don't worry about bringing your own water.

Half Marathon:
I was anticipating that the start would be the same as the 10K, it more! It went faster considering there were a lot more people and corrals and the firework show before each corral took off ... awesome!! I have issues with this race ... there are so many miles of narrow parts and people start completely walking around mile 7 .. after Magic Kingdom. When the race was said and done, I did almost 14 miles because I had to weave in between the walkers. ARRGGHHH where is your walking etiquette ladies? There are so many points in the race where trying to run is a joke, you truly expend more energy trying to pass walkers. This is why I will not do this race for a very long time. The course is nice then it gets boring around mile 9. Highlights were the soldiers from Toy Story yelling at everyone to start running, they were on the ramp up to Epcot.

All in all, the race was good. I got my three medals, which is all I wanted anyway. I was able to do this race with only three months of training after I had my daughter that in itself was a pretty huge accomplishment. Would I do it again... possibly with my daughters when they are old enough, but not in the near future.
Hello summer, you have been missed. I for one cannot run in the cold, so I am greatly appreciative that you have finally gotten here. So the big reason that I stopped for a while is because I had a bad fall skiing and partially tore and sprained two ligaments in my left knee... OUCH! So with months of physical therapy, I was finally able to start doing a little running. I did the Chicago Monster Dash Half Marathon in 2012 with a woefully sad time of 3 hours and 20+ minutes. I had to walk a lot of it and my knee was in a lot of pain. I did finish, so that was an accomplishment, but I know I was looking towards 2013 and better running times.
Here is my race schedule for this year:

Women's Half Marathon on the Mag Mile - August 31, 2014
Chicago Monster Dash Half Marathon - October 25, 2014
Naperville Half Marathon - November 9, 2014

This should hopefully get me a Neptune Moon level for the Half Marathon Fanatics, here's hoping!
Training starts next week and I cannot wait!!

I ran the Soldier Field 10 mile and helped my aunt finish her first 10 mile race at 2:18. Not too bad for my aunt who is over 60 :)
She is also training to do 2 half marathons this year!

Stay Tuned!

So last year I did the following:

Chicago Monster Dash Half Marathon - October 20, 2013 finishing time of 2:25:30
Zooma 10K - August 10, 2013 finishing time of 1:10:28
Soldier Field 10 Mile - May 25, 2013- finishing time of 1:57:35

Here is a finishing pic from Zooma. Unfortunately I participate in these events alone so I don't have anyone taking pictures of me :(
It really helps to "rest" when you have an extra hour to just lay in bed and relax.

Yesterday for cross training, my supportive triathlete (hopefully future ironman) hubby biked with me and my daughter for 30 minutes around the neighborhood. The weather is has been pretty mild for August in Chicago, so I am really taking advantage of being outdoors.

This past Saturday was my long run, a big whopping 5 miles. Whoopee, I did it though. I was very discouraged in the first mile. My knee had a slight throbbing pain, it was getting a bit hotter and running outside scares me in the fact that I might run out of water. All was well after that first mile, which is usually my problem. I have to mentally get myself through it and then all is well. I did it in an hour and 5 min. Just a bit over a 12 min. pace which isn't too shabby for someone who has been in physical therapy for the last 4 months.

Tomorrow is another three miles. Looks like it's going to warm up, so I will just treadmill it at home. Big thanks to my daughter who also sleeps 3 hours during the day. She's really growing!!
Have a great week!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09275798065867755372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4893533566811361947.post-66726714524516529632012-08-10T20:33:00.000-07:002012-08-13T19:06:38.868-07:00Fridays are rest days ... not for a stay at home mom though !!! HARest day for a stay at home mom, is there really such a thing? If I'm not cleaning or picking up after my daughter, I am doing laundry or cooking. There is no such thing as rest. Days are gone when I worked full time in front of a computer. When I would sit in a chair 8 hours a day and browse the internet and look for good sales. Gone are the days of high heels and work clothes, replaced with comfy flats, knits instead of wovens, t-shirts instead of button downs, capri pants instead of skirts.

So it's my rest day, and what do I do instead? I walked, about 7 miles today. I am fortunate to live close to a really nice mall, and I walked to it twice today :) (Hmmmm fortunate for me, not so fortunate for my hubby!)
How will this affect my 5 mile long run tomorrow. Guess we will see. No treadmill tomorrow, too, it's time to take it outside in the nice weather. Thankfully Chicagoland is cooling down, I was getting pretty tired of the 90-100 degree weather. I did some carb loading. Not too much, just a few bites of angel hair marinara. It's just 5 miles after all.
Have a great weekend!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09275798065867755372noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4893533566811361947.post-3560277100140933012012-08-09T15:46:00.002-07:002012-08-09T15:52:40.144-07:00Training for a race!! Is it even possible?Hello! Thank you for stopping by my blog, my outlet to talk about my journey to run a few races and keep healthy in general as a stay at home mom. Just to give a background, I never liked to run or do any activity in my twenties and I paid the price for "letting myself go". Prior to meeting my husband, I started dieting. When we started dating, we had our routine of going to work out. After several months of hard work, I was down 20 pounds and very comfortable with myself and just 5 pounds short of my goal weight. Now here I am, married and a stay at home mom to my beautiful 18 month old daughter. Life couldn't be better except the fact that I have a few pounds to lose from the baby weight. I was on my way and running again. I was able to run the Hot Chocolate 15K (9.3 miles) 10 months after she was born. Then winter came and so did the registration for the Chicago Marathon 2012. Plans were looking great until my ill fated day of when I had a bad fall from skiing in Park City and with it came a partially torn ligament and one sprained ligament. Needless to say, there went my hopes to run the Chicago Marathon. In order for me to run, I need a goal, a race to train for. So now my new goal is the Chicago Monster Dash Half Marathon and my 12 week training is now commencing. Hopefully I can make the time for it.
WHAT? You sit at home all day, how do you not have the time to run a few miles 4 days a week?

Hmmmm is all I can say to you. Well if you can ask that, you clearly don't have a child or you have a full time nanny. I don't have the latter, so I have to wait for naps or when my daughter is sleeping in order to run. For the past week, I have been running during naps. I have put down the laundry basket and vacuum cleaner and lace up my shoes instead. This is hard for me, I have a beautiful house that I want clean at all times, but with my 18 month old it's virtually impossible to have a spotless house. I have come to grips with that and have lowered my expectations that I have on myself to maintain a spotless house. I do however always have dinner ready and waiting for my hubby ( i love him so!).

Other issues that I need to deal with is FOOD! I love food, and I bake all the time. I pass by the kitchen and take a bite here, nibble there and I eat bad. Especially after a run, I am so hungry because it's way past lunch time and I also have a mentality that since I just lost 400+ calories, I can eat whatever. NOPE! I need to stop. Just because my daughter is eating a PB&J sandwich doesn't mean that I can have one too (maybe just a bite or two though?)

So here I am , week two of training in my 12 week program to run a half marathon. Here is the program that I am following:

I happily have done my weekday runs this week. I am very sore and it feels great. Hopefully I find the time to do my long run. Sadly my pace is not where I would like it to be, it's currently at a 12.5min/mile pace, I want to be at least at a 11.5 min pace, but I have to deal with mental issues of my knee giving in and me falling flat on my face on the treadmill. I don't want to push myself!

Wish me luck and thank you again for reading!!
